Opting to Opt Out?

If you decide to opt out of Medicare and Social Security because you are still working, be sure you talk to your Human Resources/benefits department at your employer to ensure you have all the facts straight. Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, you can get your Social Security benefits with no limit on your earnings.

When you're first eligible for Medicare, you have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period to sign up for Parts A B and D.

For example, if you're eligible when you turn 65, you can sign up during the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65. Find out when you're eligible for Medicare.
