Top 3 Tips to Improve Your Diet as You Age

Throughout our lifespan, our diet requirements will constantly evolve and change. As we age, a proper diet supports the health of our bodies and mind. Much like the engine of a car, our bodies are machines that need regular maintenance to keep it running optimally.
To keep that engine running, it’s important to know our specific dietary needs to best support our bodies throughout our lives.

Here are three tips you need to know about your diet as you age:

1.Choose nutrient-rich foods. As we age, our overall calorie requirements will decrease, but we still need the same amount of nutrients. This means that we have less wiggle room for “fun” food, such as sweets or processed foods with empty calories. Strive to make Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and lean proteins to should make up the bulk of your diet.

2.Supplement your diet. Life gets hectic so you may not be able to eat enough of the foods required to meet your nutritional needs. As a result, supplements will likely be a requirement. Due to hormonal changes, our bodies will actually require more of these nutrients to absorb the same amount as a younger adult. You may not be able to eat enough of the foods required to meet your body’s nutritional needs. As a result, supplements will likely be a requirement. Talk to your doctor about whether vitamin and/or mineral supplements are a good option for you.

3.Drink more water. You will need to be diligent about drinking enough water. We need water for quite literally every bodily function. Water is the key to proper digestion and will also help keep up your energy levels up throughout the day. There are virtually no negative side-effects of drinking too much water, so keep a bottle close by at all times and stay hydrated!

Invest the time to educate yourself on what a healthy diet looks like and talk with your doctor or a local dietitian or nutritionist to help you learn how to incorporate these healthful foods into your diet.
