Staying Open to New Experiences
For a full and happy life, the importance of staying open to new experiences can not be overstated. Though there is much to be said for peace, calm, and taking time for yourself, human beings thrive when they experience new things and prove to themselves that they can overcome challenges. There is nothing like looking back and being able to say, "I did that," whether it's speaking in front of a crowd, going on a trip, entering a competition, meeting the love of your life, or any number of things that would not have happened had you never set foot out the door.
Even though putting yourself in a new situation and interacting with new people can be daunting at first, these are among the best things to boost your confidence and self-esteem. It's important to have a healthy self-image, but many people have problems believing in themselves and their capabilities until their accomplishments prove to them that they should in fact be proud and confident.
You don't have to feel bad for being a person who enjoys routine or the comforts of daily life. If you are content and see no need to make a radical change, then you don't have to go out and throw yourself into new situations just to prove that you are interesting and experienced. There is a time for everything and everyone wants and needs different things at different times. Still, even if you are not currently seeking interesting or thrilling experiences, it never hurts to stay open. You don't need to actively pursue new experiences, but you should consider the chance to meet new people and try new things should the opportunity arise.
Doing new things and stepping out of your comfort zone are important aspects of learning and growing. You never know what you can do until you do it. You never know what you might like until you try it. Surprise yourself. Go on adventures once in a while, and not only will you probably grow as a person, but your judgements and preconceptions about other people will likely crumble away as well.
Staying open to new experiences can be particularly challenging for those of us who are more shy, reserved, and introverted. You may want to try new things and meet new people but something in you seems to be holding you back. One of the best ways to press on and get over certain fears is to simply jump in and do it. Once you get started you will be surprised at how much easier the process will become overtime.
Sure, not every new experience is going to be great. Some might be hard, frightening, or downright unpleasant. But the important thing to remember is that simply by staying open and positive you are more likely to be pleasantly surprised than horribly let down. The world has many interesting places and people to offer, and if you are willing to give them a shot from time to time you will only find yourself better off for it.
