Lose a Little Clutter. Live a Bigger/Fuller Life.

You hear experts preach the benefits of organizing your life. And if you’ve cleaned out a closet or two, you know they’re onto something. Getting rid of stuff you don’t need really can improve the quality of your life—and give a real boost to your mood.

But you shouldn’t stop at your closets and cabinets. Consider these less-conventional ideas for lightening your load. You just may make room for a bigger life.

Declutter your commitments. So many of us move from one obligation to the next. We never really stop and think about the things that bring us joy and happiness. Take stock of all of your social commitments. Do they bring you peace? Do they enrich your life? If the answer is no, they have to go. Find a balance between the people and commitments that are important and those you maintain without even thinking about them. Remember, you don’t have to accept every invitation. Learn to say no to things you don’t enjoy. And say yes to a more peaceful life.

Downsize your living space. Do you have rooms you rarely enter? Or sections of your home that are dedicated storage areas? Consider how much you’re paying in monthly overhead for the spaces you don’t really use--not to mention the added burden of dusting and cleaning those areas. If you don’t really need or use these areas, why continue paying for them? When you downsize, you lessen your responsibilities. You may even save a good deal of money.

Distribute your inheritance now. At the risk of sounding macabre, you might just consider giving away items now that you intend to bequeath to your loved ones eventually. Why not? You’ll get more pleasure out of seeing your grandson enjoy your antique desk now than you will after you’re gone. And you’ll make room for something you’ll probably enjoy more anyway. Like a clutter-free reading room. A place to practice yoga. Or just a little breathing space.

Determine what you really need. Be honest. What do you really use everyday and what do you walk by day after day after day? If you haven’t used that treadmill in over a year, perhaps it needs to go. It’s better to walk out in the sunshine anyway. The electric knife? How many 20-pound turkeys are you really going to carve in the near future? When you look at your possessions with new eyes, you see that sometimes we hang onto items out of habit, not genuine need. Donate items to someone who might really need them (think AMVETS or Goodwill), where these items are given a new useful life.

You don’t need to be reminded, but we’re going to do it anyway. Consider talking to a professional before making any major lifestyle changes.
