How to Choose the Right Skydiving School

By: Inter Valley Health Plan

Skydiving is not an easy thing to learn, and definitely not an easy thing to teach. There are various safety aspects that need to be taken care of, and jump techniques that need to be learned before you even think about getting into a plane. Finding a good skydiving teacher isn't as hard as it sounds. However, there are some tips that are worth keeping in mind. Keep reading to find out more.

Certifications

In the United States the paper that you need to look for is membership to the United States Parachute Association. It is the only institution that requires all of its members to be FAA accredited, and so all of the best skydiving schools are a part of it. The USPA certifies skydiving instructors from A to D - with D being the best grade.

History

When searching for a school, take the time to look into their history. You can do this online. If the school has had any trouble with accidents in the past, a quick Google search should bring them up. Ask around if you know people into skydiving and don't hesitate to speak to school personnel - they're obligated to be honest with you. Personnel will also be able to provide an explanation regarding any incidents in the past. This is also a good time to ask for video material. Seeing how comfortable other skydivers felt while learning how to skydive is a good indicator of what you can expect.

Equipment and Procedures

If you check the number of accidents compared to the number of people actually practicing skydiving, you will find that it is a very safe sport. However, it is only safe if you use the right equipment, and follow the correct procedures. Before you choose a skydiving school, inquire about the equipment that the school uses, and the procedures that they follow. The current guidelines can be found on the USPA's website.

Location

You won't learn to skydive in a day, so the chances are you are going to have to visit the school for a few lessons. With this in mind, try to choose a school that is located within a comfortable driving distance of where you live. The shorter the distance you have to drive, the less stressed you will feel while learning.

Other Clients

Word of mouth and other clients' experience is the best testimony you'll ever get. Again, if you know people who have gone skydiving, ask them where they went to learn the sport and whether they would recommend their teacher. Try to also check specialized online forums - although be cautious of the opinions of people you've never met. Online marketing is a growing business.

Cost

As well as paying for the lessons, and for the skydive itself, you may be required to undergo a physical. Not every school will be upfront about the cost of this, so make sure to inquire about any added extras when you ask for a quote. Keep in mind that price should be the last thing you consider. Safety is paramount.
