Do you love painting, drawing or crafting, but barely ever do it. You might be secretly creative if you find yourself yearning for more beauty and spontaneity in your life, but have long ago given up on the dream of being any kind of "artist". You're drawn to the wall of colorful paints and pencils at the art shop, but you can't justify spending money on what's ultimately a bit of a silly hobby, right?
Here are some ways that you can get back in touch with that inner child who wants to color outside the lines. Living a more creative life doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money or devote hours to learning special techniques. In fact, those sparkling moments of creativity are sometimes hidden in the most mundane of activities. Try some of these suggestions to unlock that well creative you!
Fancy name, don't let it fool you! This is just... doodling. Splash out on a notebook and a black marker and just draw. Let go of expectations and ego. There is no right or wrong way. The trick is to keep the pen moving and the mind relaxed. Often, we become so used to being our own critics that we judge ourselves before we even attempt to be creative.
Devote a few minutes a day to letting your inner doodler play. Let the blank page inspire you, and don't judge what comes out of your pen. You may end up getting ideas for further projects. When you create the space to unplug and invite your imagination to run wild, you'll find it comes knocking in other places, too.
Dress Up & Mix and Match
Being creative doesn't always have to involve art supplies and paper. Use your own body as canvas and create a different version of yourself. Try on an old outfit and add a spot of color or a bright sweater just for the sake of it, buy a pair of new shoes you never would have looked at before or put two colors together that everyone tells you don't match. Take it a step further and try something playful with your hair.
Part of what kills our creativity is getting into a rut - the habit of seeing things in the same way you've always seen them.
Change Up Your Signature Dish
Do you have a favorite dish? Add a few ingredients to modify it. Challenge yourself to prepare something delicious. Surrender to whatever you may end up creating and go with it. Soup or salad is great for this and very forgiving. Be playful and put unexpected things together. Many of the world's most delicious recipes must have been discovered this way - so who knows what you'll create? Take the time to serve your meal on a pretty plate and have fun with the presentation.
Unfortunately for many of us, the creative impulse is sometimes strangled underneath routine. Whatever the activity, however, you can build small pockets of your creative self – try it! When you release yourself the creative parts of you can really shine.
